This competition demonstrates the versatility of the working ranch horse in different categories Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail and Working Ranch Horse, all in one class.
Ranch Riding shows the horse's ability to move at a working speed with a rider. Horses will be shown at three gaits: walk, trot and lope in both directions, stop and back up.
Ranch Trail contains obstacles and is designed to show a horse's ability and willingness to perform several tasks that might be asked of him during the course of a normal day's ranch work. Obstacles that could be included, but are not limited to: gate, bridge, log drag, mailbox, rain slicker, ground tie or hobble, side pass, back, water crossing.
Working Ranch Horse portion has the rider roping a stationary object and/or live cow, cut a designated cow from a herd, demonstrate ability to work a cow and pen the cow away from the herd. Running the cattle will result in disqualification.
In addition to the Vaquero Days General Rules for Events:
The contestant should have a good working outfit. Use of non-mechanical hackamores or other type of bridles is the optional choice of the contestant; however, the judge may prohibit the use of bits or equipment he may consider severe. No hoof polish, braided or banded manes or tail extensions; this is a Ranch event - leave the show sheen in the barn. It is acceptable to clip extra hair off your horse if you want; however, you will not receive any points for doing it.
