California Style Ranch Roping

This is a three person team event. Entry fee is $30/roper or $90/team. Enter as many times as you like, but you must change one person on your team each go.

There is a one time cattle fee of $40.

Object of Event: Head and heel three calves out of a herd in 8 minutes. Ropers will be assigned three numbered calves when they enter the pen. The calves do not need to be roping in consecutive order. After a calf is headed and heeled, third person will step off their horse for ground work. The ground man must tail the animal down, if it is not already down, secure the heel rope around both hind feet if only one hind foot is caught, and place the neck rope around both front feet. Cattle must be taken to the ground in a smooth, humane manner.

• Time starts when ropers raise their hands and begin to ride to the herd. Time stops when ground person puts head loop on two front feet and heel loop on two hind feet, and steps back from the calf. Ropers must hold rodear. Do not allow herd to scatter.
  
• There is an eight minute time limit for this event. Head catch must be made in first three minutes. No limit on the amount of throws, but points will be deducted for misses. All three riders are eligible to head.

Scoring: In order to be awarded points your work must be done. Calf must be headed and heeled, and ropes must be secured on both front and hind legs.

• Walk/Trot Rule- A lope shall be more than two hops. If you lope your horse, you will be docked points. This rule is designed to prevent contestants from running up on the cattle to catch them in a rushed "team proper style". A contestant who must hurry away from a situatoin for safety's sake may be penalized.
  
  
• Fouls- A foul is an illegal catch, such as roping a calf deep. An illegal catch will result in a point penalty. An illegal catch must be removed by a team member before another calf can be caught. The penalty for illegal catch shall be -5 points.
  
  
• Heel shots that hang up around the flank and that cannot be worked down by the roper must be completely removed by another team member and will be counted as a foul. It is suggested that if you catch deep, another member of your team head the calf immediately so you can completely remove the illegal catch.
  
  
• The two foot rule- a minimum of two hind feet shall awlays be required. If an animal is caught clean around the neck and only one hind foot is caught, 5 points shall be automatically deducted. The ground man must make sure that two hind feet are in the heel loop before the calf is released.
  
  
• Front Footing- Cattle headed and heeled by one or both hind feet offer the opportunity for the third man to throw a front foot shot. He gets one chance to throw his front foot shot. Both front feet must be caught in order for the shot to be scored. If only one front foot is caught, he must dismount an tail animal down, remove his rope and put it aside, then affix the head rope around both front feet and heel rope around both hind feet as usual.
